Purpose of the Programme

The purpose of this qualification is to capitalize on opportunities to start and grow sustainable businesses that form part of the mainstream economy, enabling the learners to tender for business opportunities within both the private and public sectors.

The qualification aims to:

  • Develop appropriate skills and knowledge for the establishment and development of an enterprise.
  • Address the economic / administrative and behavioural barriers that contribute to failures in starting and sustaining an enterprise.
  • Create long-term solutions for job creation and SMME development via the building blocks and structure of a qualification that practically addresses the learning requirements of budding entrepreneurs.

Programme outcomes: 

On completion of the programme our learners will able to:

  1. Apply basic Communication skills in new venture creation context.
  2. Determine market requirements and manage the relevant marketing and selling processes.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the sector/industry in which the business operates.
  4. Determine financial requirements and manage financial resources of a new venture.
  5. Use basic Mathematics in order to fulfil new venture functions effectively.
  6. Manage business operations.

Program outline: 

Module 1 Orientation to the New Venture Creation Programme

Learners will be introduced to the skills and strategies needed to succeed in New Venture Creation. Learners will practice effective research methods, analysing information and useful team work skills.

Module 2 Business Communication

Communication in business can sometimes be a different language all together with industry jargon and terms. Learners will explore strategies of effective speaking, negotiating and communication in a business environment.

Module 3 Marketing & Selling

For every small business, customers are important. In this module, learners will study marketing techniques and strategies specific to small businesses. Learners gain an understanding in market segmentation and positioning and coordination and monitoring of promotional activities.

Module 4 Financial Skills

This module covers the management of finances and financing options for small businesses and new ventures. Learners will be able to apply the principles of costing and pricing in determining profit margins.

Module 5 Starting a New Business

This module teaches learners the individual characteristics essential to every entrepreneur and the importance of analytical, creative and innovative thinking needed for growth in business. Learners will study the environmental and economic influences of the current and the mechanisms in which the market operates.

Module 6 Mathematics

Fundamental mathematics covers the essential number and problem-solving skills needed in every line of business.

Learning assumed to be in place: 

It is assumed that learners entering this programme are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1 (Grade 9).

Recognition of prior learning (RPL): 

RPL against this unit standard is allowed. Learners who have completed Grade 10 with Communication and Mathematical Literacy on NQF2 will only need to complete modules 3 to 6.

Methodology: 

Training Programme Duration: 25 Days / 12 months.

Formative assessment: Portfolio of evidence will be submitted within two months after the training of each module. Assessment activities include evaluating all documentation produced during the process and questioning to test knowledge and ability to apply.

Final summative assessment: An Integrated Assessment will be conducted on the theoretical and practical components after all the modules are completed. During integrated assessments the assessor makes use of formative and summative assessment methods and assess combinations of practical, applied, foundational and reflective competencies.

Assessors and moderators make use of a range of formative and summative assessment methods. Assessors assess and give credit for the evidence of learning that has already been acquired through formal, informal and non-formal learning and work experience.

Certification: The QCTO will issue the certificate to successful candidates after completion of the final summative assessment.

Target group: 

This qualification is designed for learners who intend to set up or have already set up own ventures. Assessment of the competencies and knowledge in the qualification needs to be done in the context of the learner’s own new venture. 

Purpose Of The Programme: 

This qualification is intended for persons who wish to start, operate, manage and grow a new small to medium business venture. Learners attempting this qualification will be equipped with a variety of technical, business managerial and personal skills and strategies to help them succeed in the creation and sustenance of a business.

The successful learner will develop a sound foundation for the application of these skills and knowledge to explore a diverse range of entrepreneurial opportunities.

Programme Outcomes: 

On completion of this program learners will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an ability to identify and create a new venture.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of interpersonal skills required in a business environment.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of basic economics within a market economy.
  4. Manage a new venture by applying business principles and techniques.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of leadership and management.

 

Program Outline:  

Module 1 Starting a New Business

Module 2 Business Operations and Management

In this module, learners will draw and implement an action plan derived from their business plans and practice methods to optimise business productivity within their plan. 

Module 3 Project Management

This course provides the theory and core methodology you will need to manage projects or participate in project teams. It will provide you with an overview of how Project Management tools and techniques are used to establish a firm foundation for a project. You will be able to create project plans, choose the most appropriate scheduling method, select and organize a team to perform project tasks, monitor and control ongoing project performance, and close the project upon its completion. You will also learn how to minimize risk throughout the project life cycle by using contingency planning techniques. 

Module 4 Business Planning

In this module, learners are shown how to identify and explore new ideas and potential ventures and the, how to produce business, financial and operational plans. Learners are also taught about the economic and administrative issues that face small businesses and how to implement and monitor a strategic plan to overcome these challenges while improving performance.

Module 5. Managing Finances of a New Venture

This module covers the management of finances and financing options for small businesses and new ventures. Learners will be able to apply the principles of costing and pricing in determining profit margins. 

Module 6 HR and Labour Relations

In this module, learners will develop an understanding of human resources, labour relations and general administration that impacts small businesses and new ventures. 

Module 7 Communication in Business

Communication in business can sometimes be a different language all together with industry jargon and terms. Learners will explore strategies of effective speaking, negotiating and communication in a business environment.
